Impact of temperature on nerve conduction velocity

Journal Title: Journal of Neurological Sciences-Turkish - Year 2005, Vol 22, Issue 1

Abstract

Background: Heat is one of the most important factors affecting the nerve conduction studies. Skin temperature affects nerve conduction velocity, distal latency and wave morphology. Cold is more effective on wide myelinated nerve fibers than on small nerve fibers. Whereas distal latency extends 0,2 millisecond for the temperature decrease of each degree, conduction velocity in motor and sensory conduction studies slows down 1,5 to 2,5 m/s for the environmental temperature decrease of each degree. Material and Methods: In this study we evaluated the patients appealing to our Electromyography Laboratory in January (n = 210) when the environmental temperature was the lowest and in July (n = 136) when the environmental temperature was the highest. Motor and sensory nerves conduction studies were performed in upper and lower extremities in all subjects. Results: When all of the cases were analyzed it was seen that mean latencies in January were longer than mean latencies in July. It was seen that mean conduction velocities obtained in January were longer than mean conduction velocities obtained in July, especially in sensory conduction. In contrast, it was seen that mean amplitudes obtained in January were greater than the mean amplitudes obtained in July. Distal latencies, conduction velocities and amplitude values in January and July were compared in the patients diagnosed as polyneuropathy and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Of the patients examined the number of those diagnosed as CTS is very high in January when compared to that in July (%36.7 and %26.3). Conclusion: As a result of our study ıt was seen that latency had shortened, conduction velocity had extended and amplitude values had lowered with elevated temperature.
