Implementation of vitamins D and K supply guidelines at various times since their introduction in infant population of urban agglomeration in Upper Silesia
Journal Title: Annales Academiae Medicae Silesiensis - Year 2014, Vol 68, Issue 2
Abstract
INTRODUCTION The supplementation of some vitamins is set by specific guidelines. They include the supply of vitamin D from the neonatal period to old age (2009) and vitamin K to neonates and infants (2007). The aim of the study is to assess the implementation of these guidelines at various times since their introduction among infants of the urban agglomeration in Upper Silesia. MATERIALS AND METHODS The survey study was conducted among mothers of infants 6 to 12 months old, living in an urban agglomera-tion. The questionare was filled in by 149 mothers – 100 mothers in 2009/2010 (group I) and 49 in 2013 (group II). An individual evaluation of vitamin D and K intake in each month of life, with regard to the manner of feed-ing and to the principles of the practice guidelines for vitamins intake, was done. The results were analyzed sta-tistically. RESULTS Better compliance with the principles of guidelines concerning vitamin D intake was found among breast-fed and in milk formula-fed infants from group II. Proper vitamin K intake by breast-fed infants was significantly more frequent in group II. In this group, among milk formula-fed infants, needless vitamin K supplementation was more frequently applied. CONCLUSIONS 1. In spite of the introduction of obligatory guidelines for vitamin D and K supplementation a few years ago, some infants in the urban agglomeration of Upper Silesia do not receive them properly. The longer period of time the practice guidelines are obligatory, the better compliance with the recommendations is. 2. Since vitamin D and K
