In vitro establishment of Heliconia rostrata Ruiz & Pavón and Heliconia wagnerina Petersen
Journal Title: Biotecnología Vegetal - Year 2013, Vol 13, Issue 4
Abstract
The heliconia have wide appeal as ornamental plants and their environmental significance. The species Heliconia rostrata and H. wagneriana are planted in the Botanical Garden of Cienfuegos, Cuba. The aim of this study was to in vitro establish explants of these species to initiate propagation through biotechnological methods. Rhizomes were used as initial explants and were disinfected with sodium hypochlorite. In H. rostrata two concentrations of sodium hypochlorite (v/v) (2% and 5%) were tested for 5 and 10 min. In H. wagneriana two concentrations were tested (3% and 5%) for 15 and 25 min. The numbers of explants contaminated with microorganisms, the number of live explants and sprouted were quantified. Microbial contamination losses affected the explants survival. With the use of 5% sodium hypochlorite better results was obtained. Through the use of these procedures it was possible the in vitro establishment of both species of heliconia.

Agricultural yield of potato lines planted out of season of plantation in a mountainous area
The present investigation was developed with the objective of evaluating the agricultural yield of four potato lines out of season of plantation. The lines IBP-27, IBP-30, IBP-101 and IBP-107 (obtained for the Potato Bre...
In vitro culture and macropropagation as way of sustainability of forest species propagation
Forest species are economically important crops. In order to it propagation different ways are used. Those are relating to the species, resources and technologies available. This work was performed with the aim to summar...
Donor plant mycobiota and filamentous fungi contaminants from the in vitro establishment of five species forest
Although protocols to propagate large numbers of woody species by in vitro culture have been developed, microbial contamination of explants is a fundamental problem which limits its application. The objectives of this st...
Obtaining genetic profiles of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni plants propagated by in vitro culture and cuttings
Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni is worldwide known for its medicinal properties. The objective of this work was to obtain genetic profiles of in vitro grown plants or propagated by cuttings to detect genetic polymorphisms. For...
Genetic diversity of Manihot esculenta Crantz cultivars in Nicaragua assessed with microsatellite (SSR)
A total of 37 cassava cultivars from Nicaragua were evaluated using microsatellite marker to reveal the genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationship with improved cultivars, aiming to ensure a sustainable management...
