Incidence of Thyroid Structural Disorders in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Journal Title: Міжнародний ендокринологічний журнал - Year 2015, Vol 1, Issue 65
Abstract
To study the incidence of structural changes of the thyroid gland (TG) in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) type 2, we have examined 145 patients (75 patients with type 2 DM and obesity, 35 — with DM type 2 without obesity and 35 — with obesity without DM). It was found that the incidence of structural changes of TG reaches 92 % in patients with DM type 2 with obesity, 88.6 % — in patients with DM type 2 without obesity, 91.4 % — in patients with obesity and without DM and 57.1 % — in controls (without DM and obesity). All types of structural changes in TG were detected significantly more often in DM type 2 combined with obesity. Structural changes in the form of nodules are being detected significantly more often in DM type 2 with obesity (37.7 %) and in DM type 2 without obesity (29.0 %). In DM type 2, nodules occurs 2.1 times more often than in obesity without DM, and 2.9 times more often than in controls. Structural changes in TG depend on the degree of obesity. The number of nodules in TG grows with increased body weight.
