Influence of a professional football game on delayed onset muscle soreness development in dominant and non-dominant legs
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2013, Vol 29, Issue 1
Abstract
Background. Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a very important problem in professional sport. Basic knowledge about DOMS development can be useful in training design preparation and can lead to decrease risk of injuries. The aim of this study is to asses delayed onset muscle soreness development in dominant and non-dominant leg muscles after football match.Material and methods. Eleven male football players participated in the present study. Players were the Polish Young Extraleague Team members. The experiment was performed after a league game and consisted of three consecutive days. The procedure composed of following items: bilateral measurement of pain pressure threshold (PPT) over 23 locations before match, 24 hours and 48 hours after match.Results. The average PPT for dominant leg front thigh muscles decreased significantly from before (911.3±35.8 kPa) to 24 hours and 48 hours after match (765.3±35.6 kPa, p=0.002; 732.8±42.0 kPa, p=0.008 respectively). The average PPT for non-dominant front thigh muscles did not changed significantly from before to 24 hours and 48 hours after match.Conclusions. The present study points towards a difference in delayed onset muscle soreness development among muscles of dominant and non-dominant leg.
