Influence of grain processing in regard to serum metabolites and enzymes for finishing bull calves
Journal Title: Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences - Year 2011, Vol 20, Issue 4
Abstract
This study compared two grain processing methods that are widely used for beef cattle, grinding and steam pelleting, with respect to serum metabolic parameters: glucose, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), serum urea nitrogen (SUN), total serum protein (TSP), albumin, L-lactate, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), γ-glutamyltransferase (GGT) and amylase. Ten Belgian Blue bull calves were allotted randomly to each of two experimental groups: PF, fed pelleted concentrate, and GF, fed ground concentrate. During the 77-day study most parameters underwent significant variation in time, increasing only numerically serum values of total protein, albumin, AST and amylase, while serum glucose, NEFA and GGT decreased numerically. Statistically significant differences were found only between groups PF and GF for creatinine (higher in group PF, in relation with its greater average body weight) and urea nitrogen, which for unknown causes fluctuated in opposite directions in the two groups throughout most of the study and attributable to changes in ruminal protein digestion. Neither serum glucose nor L-lactate were affected by treatment of grains.

Mannanoligosaccharides or flavomycin in turkeys diets: effect on mucosa-associated microflora and growth performance
Maintaining gut health and well balanced intestinal microflora is important for the profitable production of high quality poultry. We investigated the impact of mannanoligosaccharides (MOS) in comparison with flavomycin...
Effects of direct-fed microbials and their combinations with yeast culture on in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics
This study was conducted to determine the effects of Bacillus licheniformis (Bl) and Clostridium butyricum (Cb) and their combinations with yeast culture on in vitro rumen fermentation in a twoway factorial design. Treat...
The influence of Schweres Warmblut breed stallions on the exterior of Silesian breed horses
The objective of this study was to analyse the influence of introducing Schweres Warmblut (SchW) blood on the zoometric features of Silesian breed horses. The research material was pure Silesian breed horses and crossbre...
Genetic relationships among time of egg formation, clutch traits and traditional selection traits in laying hens
In a population of Rhode Island White hens heritability of egg formation, clutch characters and traditional selection traits as well as the genetic and phenotypic correlations between them were estimated via multitrait a...
The chemical composition of selected dried fruit pomaces and their effects on the growth performance and post-slaughter parameters of young turkeys
The objective of this study was to verify the hypothesis that adding dried fruit pomaces differing in their polyphenol contents to diets for young turkeys does not compromise bird performance. Young turkeys aged up to 15...
