Influence of length and diameter of metal casting and FRC posts on the strength of restored teeth: A literature review

Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2012, Vol 62, Issue 3

Abstract

Based on the literature review the most recent concepts on the length and diameter of posts are presented. The effects of metal casting and FRC post on the restored teeth strength are described. Differences and similarities in tooth preparation for both kinds of posts are discussed. Metal cast post should be 2/3 the length of the root and 1/3 the diameter of the root. The root tissues surrounding the post should be at least 1 mm thick. FRC posts have different biomechanical properties. Adhesive cementation guarantees good integration with tooth tissues. Those features can change current tooth preparation pattern. The results of previous tests show that the length of FRC post can be slightly shorter than that of metal post. The limitation of FRC post diameter is contradictory. FRC post resistance is lower than that of metal cast post. Regardless of the post type, as much root tissue as possible should be left.
