Inquisition and Christian Heresies: Their Impact on Society in the Historical Context

Abstract

This article is devoted to the phenomenon of the Inquisition in the 12th and 13th centuries. The author analyzes the main socio-cultural, political and economic preconditions of the emergence of this church institution as well as the concept of heresy and the main categories of heretics that dominated in the then European society. Along with the causes of the Inquisition, the methods of its activity are revealed, and the types of punishments for heretics are classified. The author also draws conclusions about the impact of the Inquisition institution on the establishment of social institutions in Europe in the following years.
