Interakcyjny gest potakiwania w wystąpieniach publicznych

Abstract
Head nodding is one of the most popular gestures used in public speeches by Polish language speakers. Its semantics have been examined on the basis of several hours of audio-visual recordings showing a number of public speakers. The recordings have been grouped into several hundred files containing various types of nodding (following more than a dozen semantic patterns). In an integrated multimodal analysis, in which the meaning of the message is the aggregate of the actions of all – more or less consciously applied – means of semiotic expression (words, facial expressions, gaze, gestures and intonations), the following functions of nodding, in most cases clearly addressed to the recipient, have been distinguished: confirmation, emphasis, greeting, thanks, and self-reaction. Most often, however, this gesture has accompanied inclusions and enumerations, hence assuming the function of a binding or meta-linguistic nature.
