INVASION OF ALIEN PLANTS IN POLISH WOODS

Abstract
The current (postglacial) Polish flora is relatively young. In contrast to the flora of East Asia and North America it is relatively sparse in species of trees. Due to the demand for various wooden raw materials, exotic trees have been introduced for many years, for example Acer negundo,Quercus rubra, Robinia pseudoacacia and Padus serotina. Some of these have proved to be invasive species. In recent years, thermophilous fruit trees (Juglans regia, Persica vulgaris, Armeniaca vulgaris), lianas (Parthenocissus sp. Clematis vitalba, Lonicera caprifolium) and shrubs (Amelanchier sp. div. , Cotoneaster sp. div., Lonicera sp. div., Spiraea sp. div. and others) are frequent. The expansion of herbaceous plants (i.e. Solidago, Reynoutria, Impatiens, Echinocystis, Heracleum spp.) is a particular problem in the riparian forests.
