Investigations of magnetic properties of soils in the Cisna – Wetlina Landscape Park
Journal Title: Geology, Geophysics & Environment - Year 2016, Vol 42, Issue 1
Abstract
Magnetic study of 16 samples of topsoil and 2 soil profiles (11 samples) in the area of Cisna – WetlinaLandscapeParkhas been done. Whole collection of the samples represents typical Carpathian soils – brown and sour. Magnetic susceptibility, frequency dependence of magnetic susceptibility, temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility, thermal decay of saturation isothermal remanent magnetization, parameters of hysteresis loop and anhysteretic remanent magnetization of the samples were measured in a laboratory. Mass magnetic susceptibility of topsoil specimens is below 40∙10-8 m3kg-1 which indicates that investigated area is probably non-polluted nowadays. The study of the samples from two soil profiles reveals a slight enhancement of magnetic susceptibility in the upper horizons presumably related to the natural processes. A wide range of frequency dependence of magnetic susceptibility of topsoil samples does not yield any conclusions. The temperature dependences of magnetic susceptibility and saturation isothermal remanence of 4 soil samples show the presence of iron sulphide minerals (pyrrhotite) and maghemite associated with hematite. The occurrence of other iron sulphide minerals in soil is also possible. The saturation isothermal remanence curves do not confirm the presence of magnetite. Studies of hysteresis loop reveal a significant role of paramagnetics among magnetic minerals occurring in the samples. Hysteresis parameters (coercive force, coercivity of remanence, saturation magnetization, isothermal remanent magnetization) and anhysteretic remanent susceptibility allow to evaluate the grain size distribution and reveal the presence of pseudo-single domain (PSD) grains.

Geoportal of mining objects in Lesser Poland
Southern Poland is a well developed mining area. There are copper and coal mines in Lower Silesia, huge coal deposits in Silesia and even oil in Subcarpathia. It is not well known that in Lesser Poland you can find almos...
The impact of the combustion waste landfill of the Skawina Power Plant on selected elements of the agricultural production area
Field observations and interviews with residents of Kopanka, Ochodza and Borek Szlachecki villages indicate that the agricultural production area located near the combustion waste landfill is negatively affected. Two dis...
An analysis of solar energy conversion systems based on photon and thermal processes
Solar spectral irradiance covers a fairly broad wavelength range. Solar radiation is part of the electromagnetic spectrum which is described by the concept of wave-particle duality. The corpuscular theory of electromagne...
The chemistry and quality of water from the artesian wells of the Jurassic aquifer in Krakow
Selected quality parameters of groundwater from four artesian wells of the Jurassic aquifer located in the center of Krakow (Cracow) are presented. Water from these public wells i.e. Nadzieja, Jagielloński, Królewski and...
