Irrigation protocols in endodontic treatment and mechanical properties of root canal dentine

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2018, Vol 71, Issue 1

Abstract

Introduction. Irrigation is an integral part of root canal treatment that enables disinfection of the part of root canal system that is inaccessible to mechanical preparation. To achieve an optimal effect it is necessary to use chemical properties of two irrigating solutions. Aim of the study. To evaluate the different irrigation regimes and their influence on the mechanical properties of root canal dentine. Material and methods. The roots of 55 extracted human teeth stored in 0.1% alcohol thymol solution were used in this study. Roots were embedded in acrylic resin and polished to obtain flat dentine surface for the analysis. Specimens were then coded and divided at random into five groups of 11 teeth each. Each group was subjected to a different irrigation regime: Group 1 – 20 ml 2% Chloraxid (20 min), 10 ml Endosal (2 min), 10 ml 2% Chloraxid (2 min); Group 2 – 20 ml 5.25% Chloraxid (20 min), 10 ml Endosal (2 min), 10 ml 5.25% Chloraxid (2 min); Group 3 – 20 ml 2% Chloraxid (20 min), 10 ml Endosal (2 min), 10 ml 2% Gluko-Chex (2 min); Group 4 – 20 ml 2% Chloraxid (20 min), 10 ml Endosal (2 min), 10 ml NanoCare Gold (2 min); Group 5 – 0.9% NaCl (20 min; control). Each specimen was submitted to Vickers microhardness indentation tests and surface profile measurements were made with the contact profilometer. Results. In all groups, except for the control group, there was a statistically significant decrease in hardness and increase in roughness values. Conclusion Results obtained in this study provide evidence of a substantial effect of all irrigation regimes, except the controls, on the mechanical properties of root canal dentine.
