Ivan Turgenev as a Precursor of Symbolism (to the 200th anniversary of the writer’s birth)

Abstract
The article deals with an attempt to interpret the work of Ivan Turgenev as a precursor of symbolism, what is untypical to the point of view of contemporary literary criticism. The analysis is based on the aesthetic reception of Turgenev’s artistic heritage by representatives of Russian symbolism. Mystical content, symbols and impressionism as the key parameters of symbolism, formulated by D. Merezhkovsky in the work “On the causes of decline and on the new trends of contemporary Russian literature”, in the literary critical essays of representatives of Russian symbolism are projected onto Turgenev’ heritage.
