Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2012, Vol 18, Issue 1
Abstract
Introduction: The prevention of cardiovascular system diseases, both primary and secondary, concerns mainly the creation of adequate health behaviours, or a change of anti-health behaviours among individuals/patients with respect to a preferable style of life. A proper level of the preparation of students of medicine for the modification of the cardiovascular risk factors diagnosed in themselves and their patients is an important element in the strategy of actions in the area of prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Objective: The objective of the study was evaluation of the knowledge and health behaviours of students of Faculties of Medicine concerning cardiovascular risk factors, and their application in practice.Material and methods: The study covered a group of 104 students in the 6th year at the Faculties of Medicine in Lublin and Warsaw. The method of a diagnostic survey was applied with the use of a questionnaire form, a test of knowledge, and anthropometric measurements. Results: The results showed that the majority of students possessed only a mediocre level of knowledge concerning important risk factors related with the style of life which are conducive to the development of cardiovascular diseases. The respondents preferred health promoting aspects of behaviours with respect to non-smoking and maintenance of a proper body weight (approx. 80% of respondents each), and maintenance of a mediocre and high level of motor activity (over90% of respondents). However, analysis of nutrition in the group of students examined indicated that over 42% of them practiced inadequate mode of nutrition, while almost 53% applied nutrition on a satisfactory level. Conclusions: In the population group examined, health promoting aspects of behaviour were noted with respect to non- smoking, maintenance of proper body weight and an optimum level of motor activity, as well as manifestations of anti- health practices concerning nutrition.Key wordscardiovascular diseases, risk factors, life style, health knowledge and behaviours, students of medicine
