Kult świętej Jadwigi Śląskiej w Ameryce Łacińskiej
Journal Title: Studia Salvatoriana Polonica - Year 2017, Vol 11, Issue
Abstract
The devotion to Saint Hedwig of Silesia was introduced and spread in Latin America by Franciscans. Members of this order were the first missionaries to arrive in Mexico, by invitation of Hernan Cortez, on August 13th, 1522. In 1570, in the great ecclesiastical province of Lima, Franciscans were awarded the title of „doctrineros” (indoctrinators) of the Church. During the 19th and 20th century, some other religious orders devoted to Saint Hedwig settled in America; missionaries of Saint Vincent de Paul, missionaries of the Holy Family of Nazareth, as well as the Oblates of Saint Joseph. Polish immigrants, mainly from Silesia, arrived in Texas (1855) and Curitiba (1869), running away from the social turmoil in Europe. They were led by a Franciscan Leopold Moczygemba and a layman Sebastian Woś Saporski. These immigrants spread the devotion to our holy lady in Santos, Sao Paulo (Brazil), and – through the work of the Church – in Venezuela, Panama, Costa Rica and Bolivia. The cult of Saint Hedwig is entrenched in several Latin American parishes, where followers worship her through prayers, novenas, pictures and sculptures. As a mother, wife and sister, the intercession of Saint Hedwig is requested particularly for the homeless, for people in sorrow, for people in debt or with a mortgage, for barren women, and for the hopeless. Latin American people feel close to and trust in Saint Hedwig as their Defender (Abogada); they worship her as an advocate before the Father, as a holy person faithful to the teachings of the gospel and humble on her way of life with Father. They see in her the mother and the wife who follows the cross of Jesus, our Saviour, with patience and perseverance, vanquishing pain and suffering.
