Kutyák a senkiföldjén / The Dogs from Nowhere

Abstract
In this article the author analyzes the movie Dogs (Câini), directed by Bogdan Mirică. This feature film, the first made by the young author, won the Transylvania Trophy at the 2016 edition of Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF). The text makes the portraits of characters, focusing on their actions in this liminal situation generated by the arrival of Roman (Dragoş Bucur) in the power vacuum created by the death of his grandfather, Nea Alecu. Roman, wanting to sell the land inherited from Nea Alecu, learns that he was actually the leader of a criminal organization, which thrive in the border region between Romania and Ukraine. Wanting to resist the evil in the region, now symbolised by Samir (Vlad Ivanov), Roman falls victim to his own helplessness, and archaic territorial instincts of the people who fear „potential discipline” that can be set up in the region by the capitalized civilization in this land dominated by fear and revenge.
