LANGUAGE AND CULTURE RELATED PECULARITIES OF ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS OF UKRAINIAN FICTION (BASED ON TRANSLATION OF SHORT STORIES BY UKRAINIAN AUTHORS)

Abstract
The article deals with the ways and methods of cultural realia representation in English translations of short stories by Ukrainian authors. The results of the research show the use of different ways of rendering non-equivalent vocabulary by translators, namely transcription, transliteration, a combination of transcription and descriptive translation, explanation in footnotes, as well as analogues and hyperonyms as means of approximate translation. It demonstrates that different methods of translation should be combined for successful rendering of national colouring. Nowadays translators still have difculty both in rendering the content of realia and in their understanding. The use of only one means of rendering realia, such as transliteration or translation, may cause inappropriate perception of the text by the reader, the text being overloaded with foreign words or void of national colouring in the content respectively. The article illustrates successful ways to represent ethnographic realia in English translations. The main means of transmission of realia is transliteration, accompanied with explanations and descriptions. The authors emphasize that accurate translation of nation-specic vocabulary representing realia is vital for understanding the text, particularly ction, because it is an important way of cross-cultural communication.
