Learning in an Age of Opportunity: Untold Stories of Junior High School Learners with Special Needs

Abstract
This study used a qualitative-narratological design to unfold the stories of three (3) junior high school learners with special needs at Polomolok National High School. Purposive sampling was utilized to choose the study participants and used an in-depth interview to gather the data needed. Findings of the study revealed the challenges learners with special needs faced, such as: academic and classroom-related struggles, inclusive environment and peer support, and teachers' adjustment. In terms of how they coped with the challenges, the following themes were generated: resilient and supportive community and adaptive learning strategies and communication. Lastly, the learners with special needs uttered that motivation, academic improvement, inclusive education, and collaboration are the insights they have gained from their experiences. Through the exploration of these narratives, this study can help reduce stigma and discrimination and promote a more positive and inclusive culture that values diversity and recognizes the contributions of all learners.
