LEXICAL-SEMANTIC FIELD AS A STRUCTURAL ELEMENT OF LANGUAGE WORLD PICTURE

Abstract

Recently, there has been an increase of interest in world picture. A central issue in this sphere is the world picture division and representation of conceptual world picture and language world picture as two parts of world picture in concepts and short language units – lexemes or word combinations. Although considerable amount of research has been devoted to these aspects, few attempts have been made to investigate interconnection between language world picture and lexical-semantic field in cognitive aspect. That is why the major task of this study is to analyze the theoretical basis of such linguistic phenomena as «language world picture» and «lexical-semantic field». This paper focuses on scientific researches about field theory from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. Special attention is paid to division world picture into conceptual world picture and language world picture. Comparing two types of world picture, main differences can be singled out. The main research methods are descriptive and method of comparison, which are used while field theory and two types of world picture are analyzed. As a result I show that among many definitions of the term «lexical-semantic field» only one gives all necessary characteristics of this phenomenon. This definition is very similar to definition of the term «language world picture». After comparing them, I make a conclusion that first definition is a component of second one. That is why, I admit that language world picture consists of lexical-semantic fields. This information can be used in the process of teaching Lexicology, Semantics, and Cognitive Linguistics
