Logistics Capabilities as Determining Factors for SMEs’ Internationalization: A Systematic Literature Review
Journal Title: Revista CEA - Year 2023, Vol 9, Issue 19
Abstract
The aim of this article was to establish the set of logistics capabilities that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) need for internationalization—which ultimately improves their competitiveness. This study adopted a qualitative methodology. More specifically, it employed a systematic review (SR) of the literature on logistics capabilities published between 2011 and 2021 and indexed in several research databases: Scielo, Dialnet, Redalyc, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and Scopus. The results allowed us to conclude that multiple relevant factors are inherent in the development of an organization’s logistics capabilities: supply; storage; distribution; infrastructure; cost optimization; technology and innovation; adaptation to change; and risk management. These capabilities improve SMEs’ skills to achieve objectives such as commercial expansion. In addition, constant skills upgrading by SMEs helps them to adopt and design corporate measures and strategies that increase their participation in external markets, thus generating competitive advantages for their internationalization.
