LOVE AND LIES IN SHORT IN STORIES BY BERNHARD SCHLINK

Abstract
The article is devoted to the work of contemporary German writer Bernhard Schlink, the author of the famous novel «The Reader», the successful writer of short stories, the winner of many prestigious international awards in the domain of literature. The author of the article attempts to analyze novels «Summer Lies» (010) in the context of diversity of the ostents of human love (between man and woman, between children and parents, between generations). Against the background of agonists’ love, in their close relationship the motives and the consequences of lies are revealed. In Schlink’s works lies, as love is showed in a versatile way: in the rst case it is the creation of the illusion of happiness, in the second – it is the rescue from the threatening reality, and in the third one it is self-delusion, leading to tragedy of hero’s or somebody’s life. Such novels as «After the Season», «The House in the Forest», «The Last Summer», and «The Journey to the South» are analyzed more particularly. The article touches upon the issue of gender peculiarities of heroes. Although, the women in his stories appear only as background gures, for the most part they are more powerful and successful characters, their domination in the relationship concerns men, which becomes the reason of lies. The article gives detailed analyses of elements of individual style of the author, among which are brevity of thought, emotional restrain, absence of reccuring characters, cliffhanger ending, combination of illusion and reality, intensive use of subjunctive mood in order to render thoughts and doubts of the heroes.
