Abstract

In the Year of Mercy the Catholic Church clearly realizes, that its constant mission is to proclaim God’s mercy. Its duty is to appeal to the mercy of God in prayer and to practise it in everyday life of its members. According to Pope Francis, a constant task for the Church is to reveal God’s Face of mercy (misericordiae vultus). In the Bull Misericordiae vultus the Pope shows Mary, the Mother of Mercy, as an example and help in discovering the joy of God’s tenderness. „No one has penetrated the profound mystery of the incarnation like Mary has. Her entire life was shaped by the presence of mercy made flesh. The Mother of the Cruci-fied and Risen One has entered the sanctuary of divine mercy because she has participated intimately in the mystery of His love” (nr 24). In this context, a question arises about the proper understanding of the title „Mother of Mercy” in the contemporary Mariology. Conse-quently, the second question may be asked as regards the role of Mary in the fulfilling of the above-mentioned tasks of the Church. They consist in introducing Christians to the great mys-tery of God’s mercy. This paper is based on current teaching of the Church. Pastoral implica-tions derived from the reflection on Mariology are its additional value.
