Mathematical Skills Challenges Vis-À-Vis Overall Math Performance of Students at Risk of Dyscalculia

Journal Title: Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal - Year 2025, Vol 32, Issue 5

Abstract

Mathematical difficulties are a common challenge for students at risk of dyscalculia, a specific learning disability that affects numerical processing and mathematical reasoning. This study investigates the impact of various mathematical skill challenges on the overall math performance of students at risk of dyscalculia, focusing on areas such as general mathematics, numeracy, subitizing, counting, ordering, directionality, place value, and applying number skills to solve problems and everyday tasks involving numbers. Additionally, the study explores how these challenges influence students' academic achievement in mathematics. The research aims to identify the critical areas in which these students struggle the most and to highlight how these difficulties manifest in classroom settings, affecting learning outcomes. Using a descriptive-correlational research design, the study sampled 60 elementary school students from Zamboanga City. Data was collected using a combination of teacher assessments, classroom observations, and standardized math tests to measure students' mathematical skills and performance. The findings suggest that practical application of mathematical concepts enhances students' understanding of numeracy and math in real-life contexts. Shalev & Tsur (2022) emphasizes the importance of early identification of dyscalculia for providing targeted interventions to prevent long-term academic struggles. Early screening methods, such as teacher checklists and classroom observations, can help detect mathematical learning difficulties before they significantly impact a student’s academic progress. This study underscores the importance of early identification and targeted intervention strategies to address these difficulties and improve the mathematical performance of students at risk for dyscalculia. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of dyscalculia and offers valuable insights into effective support systems that can enhance mathematical proficiency for these students.
