Abstract

Aleksandra Matczynska (University of Wrocław) Masuria - a journey through the trail of the culture heritage of the first protestant country in Europe. 14th Polish-German Seminar Wrocław-Halle-Siegen, Mikołajki, 5–10 VI 2017 The 14th Polish-German Seminar Wrocław–Halle–Siegen, which took place on 5–10 June 2017, was focused on the examination of art and religious tendencies of the Masuria region – the first Protestant country in Europe. The seminar program consisted of several excursions, aimed at getting to know the monuments of sacred and secular architecture of Warmia and Masuria. The participants had the opportunity to take part in many lectures and group workshops on the issues of theology, history and culture of the former Royal Prussia and the province of East Prussia. Traditionally, all the seminar participants were divided into three workshop groups, led by the professors from three universities: Prof. Jan Harasimowicz – Head of the Department of the Renaissance and Reformation at the Art History Institute, University of Wrocław; Prof. Veronika Albrecht-Birkner from the Department of the Evangelic Theology at the University of Siegen, and Prof. Udo Sträter – Head of the Institute of the Historical Theology and Rector of The Martin Luther University in Halle and Wittenberg. The main task of this year’s group workshop was to analyse, interpret and finally create museum narratives on selected objects from the Museum of Warmia and Masuria in Olsztyn, for three different audiences: children, the elderly, and the graduates of humanities. The 14th Polish-German Seminar once again showed how valuable and essential is the direct co-operation of history, theology and art history researchers. Its significance becomes particularly evident in the cultural heritage of multi-faith regions with complex geographic-historical conditions, which the area of former East Prussia, undoubtedly is.
