Medical Education and Medical Practice How was it Turkish?

Journal Title: Tıp Eğitimi Dünyası - Year 2015, Vol 14, Issue 44

Abstract

SUMMARY: Medical education is delivered in Turkish in the vast majority of medical schools in Turkey. When the first modern school was opened in 1827 the medium of education was French. However the aim of Sultan Mahmut II. was to proceed to education in Turkish language. This was succeeded only in 1870 after many struggles. During this time many medical textbooks were written in and translated into Turkish. After the proclamation of Republic in 1923 a movement was started to create and use Turkish words instead of words of foreign origin. Turkish words for many medical terms are suggested, and are used.
