Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 9, Issue 11

Abstract

Metabolic syndrome is an important risk factor of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. This syndrome is a main side effect of treating mental illnesses such as Schizophrenia. As a consequence, mortality rate increases between patients with such disorders. In this study, prevalence of metabolic syndrome in schizophrenic patients is investigated for the first time in Iran. The study population was 200 Schizophrenic patients in Bandar Abbas all diagnosed using DSM IV criteria. The metabolic syndrome was investigated using ATP III, IDF, and Iran criteria. Required variables of metabolic syndrome were extracted from Lab data collected through experiments on the patients. In addition, age of patients was also recorded. Collected information were analyzed using SPSS 16 through descriptive and statistical methods such as Average and Standard Deviation, Chi-square and Odd-Ratio tests. Finally, results were validated by comparing with other studies. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome for criteria ATP III, IDF, and Iran was respectively 10%, 9.5%, and 6% which indicates that based on all criteria, prevalence of this syndrome in Bandar Abbas was less than other studies. In addition, prevalence of this syndrome is higher in females than in males (p-value = 0.001). Moreover, with increasing age, prevalence of metabolic syndrome was also increased (p-value = 0.001). This result was also observed with increasing duration of antipsychotic drug usage (p-value = 0.008).Overall, although the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in this study was less than most of other studies, results of independent variables were almost similar to other studies.
