Miss, do we have to listen to that? On listening to music at school

Abstract

The article aims to look at the problem of listening to music at school as a whole, taking into consideration historical and aesthetic determinants of that form of children’s and young people’s musical activity. What forms the basis for the refl ections is a conviction of a huge role of music in a human life, as well as observations from the school reality in terms of neglected, regrettably, aesthetic education – music education included. Unsatisfactory results of a young person’s encounter with a musical work in the act of perception are on the one hand a consequence of the complexity of the perceptive process itself, but on the other one – an outcome of educational mistakes or neglect. Therefore, it seems justifi ed to articulate, at least, some determinants of listening to music and to formulate a few demands referring to school practice.
