Molecular aspects of periodontitis in obese patients – review of literature

Abstract
Introduction. Numerous scientific studies confirm the modifying effect of obesity on the development and course of periodontitis. On the other hand, it has been proved that untreated periodontitis accelerates the development of insulin resistance and hence type 2 diabetes in obese patients. Aim of the study. To review literature on molecular mechanisms responsible for interaction between obesity and periodontitis. Results. Disturbed hormonal secretion, deregulated immune response and lack of balance between oxidation and reduction reactions may be the key to identify the nature of relationship between obesity and periodontitis. It seems that establishing these relationships may contribute to designing more effective therapeutic strategies.
