MONGOLIAN INTENTION IN THE SCIENTIFIC BIOGRAPHY OF OLEKSIY OLEKSIY TERENOZHKIN

Abstract

The geography of the research interests and the personal field explorations of the prominent archeologist Oleksiy Ivanovich Terenozhkin embraces the widest territories – from the Central Europe to “the depths of Asia”. He investigated the impact of Hallstatt on the genesis of Scythian culture at the territory of Ukraine and searched for the additional argumentation for the confirmation of evidences of Scythian migration paths in the monuments of the East. It the beginning of his scientific carrier, O. Terenozhkin has even planned to go to Mongolia for two years in order to carry out the respective researches and to proceed with the Mongolian history studies. The expectancies haven’t been mentioned ever before up to now in any written research or publication devoted to the biography of O. Terenozhkin. These intentions are illustrated by three letters from the correspondence between O. Terenozhkin and geologist M. Meyerov dated from summer of year of 1932 to the beginning of 1933 which had been found in the personal archive of O. Terenozhkin and published and analyzed in the article. The application of O. Terenozhkin to the geological expedition to realize these plans was partially explained by the situation that the archeological explorations in the country had been significantly cut by that moment. In addition, the scientist kept other partner cooperation and relationship directly with the geological research institutions before. It’s necessary to emphasize that in 30th years of XX century O. Terenozhkin didn’t simply carry out archeological excavations in the Central Asia and is interested in the monuments and antiquities of the region ‘in general’ and for ‘nice to know’ but started to specialize exactly in medieval archeology and history. The scientist was also preparing the study on Mongolian history that time. He was sure in the sufficiency of his knowledge and abilities to fulfil the plan and intended to complete this textbook in one-two years in case if the moving to Mongolia realized. So only because of whole range of obstacles Oleksiy Ivanovich didn’t become the one of the prominent founders of the archeological research of Mongolia.
