Monitoring and prediction of methane emission in the longwall and possibilities to control the longwall system
Journal Title: Mining – Informatics, Automation and Electrical Engineering - Year 2016, Vol 525, Issue 1
Abstract
Monitoring systems which are applied in mining today are based on solutions developed in 1990s. The knowledge about methane emission from rock mass and goafs, occurring during the longwall-based coal cutting process, has been well systematized. Normally, methane concentration is measured at the face ends. However, in the light of accidents which have happened over the last few years, such a solution does not see to be sufficient in certain conditions. Extra measurement points inside the longwall make it possible to monitor methane concentration as they enable a faster reaction to methane hazards in this area. What is more, it is possible to have shortterm prediction of methane hazards of relatively high accuracy. The paper presents methane hazard monitoring methods that have been used so far. It also describes a proposed system for measuring and predicting methane concentration in the longwall and for using the obtained knowledge about methane concentrations to control the operations of a cutter-loader. Finally, the author presented the results of experimental research to illustrate the efficiency of the system.
