Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2006, Vol 2, Issue 3
Abstract
Face of the cleft lip and palate patients is additionallydeformed by coexisting changes in the shape and the positionof the mandible. Unfortunately there are still differentstatements about the role of the mandible in this deformation.AIM: aim of the study was to evaluate changes in themorphology of the mandible existing in cases of bilateralcleft of the upper lip, alveolar ridge and palate.MATERIAL AND METHODS: The evaluation wasbased on cephalometric measurements of 16 patients with bilateral cleft of the lip, alveolus and palate. Some elementsof Segner-Hasund, Schwarz and Ricketts analysis were takeninto consideration.RESULTS: The results indicated that deviations in themorphology of the mandible in patients with bilateral cleftof the lip, alveolus and palate were very common, and wereassociated with the changes of its shape and position in a craniofacial configuration. The shortening and the backwardrotation of the body of the mandible were usuallyseen in these subjects, while lower incisors were lean intothe lingual direction.CONCLUSIONS: The position of the mandible andits shape plays an important role in the configuration of thecontour of the facial profile. The shortage of the mandibularbody and its retruded and downward position in patientswith bilateral cleft of the lip, alveolus and palatecaused chin retrusion in the facial profile, what additionallyintensify disproportion between convex upper lip andretruded lower part of the face.(Orthod.
