Movement patterns of basketball throws as related to the degree of motor task complexity
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2013, Vol 29, Issue 4
Abstract
Background. Studies of movement patterns using electromyography (EMG) have a practical application and may reduce the risk of potential contusions or support treatment. The study analyzed shot jump technique, most often used by basketball players. The aim of the study was to find out how the complexity of movement patterns of the studied basketball techniques determined changes in time and elctromyographic (EMG) signal values. Material and methods. The first five specialist basketball players, training at the level of the Second National League were selected for the study. Movement patterns were described and the activity of the most important muscles was recorded using Noraxon electromyographic system, synchronized with movement image by quick cameras (250 frames/s).Results. The jump shot phase after passing and jump shot with the running defender was about 0.1 seconds shorter than the free jump shot lasting on average 0.6 s. The value of a mean EMG signal in triceps brachii and rectus femoris muscles, dominating during jump shot performance is directly proportional to the complexity of movement tasks. Conclusions. Electromyography (EMG) unifies medicine and sports sciences, helping understand physiology of human body movements. The study found that in healthy basketball players, movement patterns of the same jump shot have similar time and bioelectric stimulation values, however they change while passing the ball or due to pressure from the defender. Therefore, in basketball training, different kinds of jump shots should be performed with particular emphasis put on jump shot after passing the ball, the technique most frequently used in basketball matches.
