Możliwości rozwoju kolei metropolitalnej w Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowskiej Metropolii

Abstract

First concepts of the fast railway connection construction in the area of the current Upper Silesian-Zagłębie Metropolis appeared in the 1970s. Designed in the next decade Regional Railway was supposed to replace metro to local residents. A consequence of socio-economic changes after 1989 was railways regression, many lines were closed, and on the remaining ones passenger transport volumes significantly decreased. The attempt to look at railways at a different perspective by creating a fast connection & nbsp; Tychy–Katowice–Sosnowiec was underdeveloped and implemented only partially. The idea to strengthen the role of railway in the transport system & nbsp;have then returned together with creating an Upper-Silesian Metropolis and due to the availability of additional funds for public transport. The purpose of this article is to assess technical capabilities and estimate the potential costs of a metropolitan railway project. Particular attention was given to: timetable planning conditions, & nbsp; infrastructural limitations and the possibility of increasing lines capacity as well as integration with city transport.
