MRI Evaluation Of Posterolateral Corner Injury
Journal Title: International Journal of Orthopaedics Traumatology & Surgical Sciences - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 1
Abstract
The structures of the posterolateral corner (PLC) of the knee have recently been "re-discovered" in providing stability of the knee. PLC is a made of group of tissues located at the outer corner of the knee .These tissues together stabilise the knee against knee hyperextension, varus angulation and tibial external rotation. PLC injuries most often associated with central ligaments, meniscus and cartilage injuries. We have tried to highlight the importance of posteriolateral corner injuries in this retrospective study done in St John’s Hospital , Bangalore , India where MRI of all knee trauma cases between age groups 18 to 57 was evaluated retrospectively from January 2015 to January 2016 .We got a total of 101 cases which had features of posterolateral corner injuries. Out of 101 patients the most common ligament injury was arcuate ligament 96%, Popliteal tendon 95%, Popliteofibular ligament 90%, lateral collateral ligament 71%,biceps femoris tendon 45.5% and fabello popliteal ligament 3%. In patients with cruciate ligamentous injuries, the presence of a posterolateral corner injury influences treatment and surgical planning. If posterlateral corner injuries are neglected at the time of treatment it may lead to posterolateral knee instability, anterior cruciate ligament graft failure and improve the chances of success of PCL reconstruction.
