MULTIVOCALITY OF CROSS IN POLISH SOCIETY PRACTICES Religion and Basic Forms of Social and Political Participation: Empirical Reasons behind the Construction of the Model of Civic Religion

Journal Title: Miscellanea Anthropologica et Sociologica - Year 2012, Vol 13, Issue 1

Abstract

The main problem I focus on is the axiology of society in Poland, positioning the place occupied by religious faith and political choices among values that are universally praised and desired. To analyse this issue I propose a research perspective that is appropriate for the sociology of religion and one that includes an empiric exploration spanning five years. Furthermore, additional material drawn from qualitative research reveals a wide variety of opinions regarding relationships occurring between political and national identifications and perceptions of the religious sense of life. The hierarchies revealed during the period 1989–2010 – a time of change and stabilization – point to important dynamics of change, particularly concerning the perception of religious faith and doctrine of nation. The phenomenon of the integration of religious faith and political doctrine appears as a fundamental problem, key to the understanding of the mass imagination in academic dialogue, and also in public debates. The question which should be posed relates to the adequacy of theoretical instruments for explaining it and for possibly formulating the prognoses, in relation to the Poles’ religious and political life. The analysis is based mainly on my own research, which was conducted using a representative sample; the questions regarding the place of politics and the religious sense of life are the key issues.
