“Native/foreign”: semantic models of the city and the village images in Taras Shevchenko’s poetry

Abstract
The article deals with the multilevel structure of the image of the city and the village in Shevchenko’s poetry. The special place for the opposition “city/village” is considered as the meaning model in such versions as “civilization/culture”, “center/province”, “sacred/profane”, “evil/good”, “hell/paradise”. This complex of the binary blocs comes from the universal opposition “native/foreign”, which is the classical semantic code of the European culture. Mainly, the opposition “city/village” in the poetry text is the author’s ideological and aesthetic manual that determines the type of the mythic and symbolic interpretations of the elements of urban and rural areas (folk, folk-historical, sacral, cultural and historical, individual and creative).
