Antioxidant and Cardioprotective Effect of Coconut Water against Doxorubicin Induced Cardiomyopathy
Journal Title: Journal of Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences University - Year 2013, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
Background: Cardiomyopathy is a chronic disorderaffecting the muscle of the heart. It mayresult in to heart failure. Aim: To investigatethe effects of coconut water on antioxidant andcardiac markers on doxorubicin induced cardiomyopathyin wistar rats. Material and Methods:21 wistar rats were divided into 3 groupsof 7 rats per group. Group I served as Controlwhile Group II and Group III were administered2.5mg/Kg doxorubicin. Group III in additionwas administered with 3ml of coconut water for28 days. Results: The results obtained showedthat the level of Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH),Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) and AlanineAminotransferase were significantly increasedin Group II when compared with the ControlGroup (P<0.05). On the other hand, the levelof antioxidant vitamins C and E were significantlydecreased in Group II when comparedwith the Control Group. However, on the treatmentwith coconut water, the cardiac enzymeswere decreased while antioxidant vitamins improved. Conclusion:This could probably implythat coconut water possess beneficial antioxidantand cardioprotective potentials.
