Caladium Bicolor as Bioadsorbent for Treatment of Industrial Effluents

Abstract

The uses of low cost substrate have been proposed for the removal of heavy metals from industrial effluent and wastewaters. The study examined the effectiveness of Caladium bicolor (wild cocoyam) leaf for the removal of Pb2+ and Cr3+ ion from synthetic wastewater. The results showed the ability of Caladium bicolor as an adsorbent with respect to weight, time and pH. The optimum sorption of Pb2+ and Cr3+ unto Caladium bicolor was obtained between pH 6 and 7. The results obtained after contacting for 50 minutes showed that Caladium bicolor achieved the percentage removal of 68.1 and 72.4 for Pb2+ and Cr3+ respectively. Therefore, Caladium bicolor could be proposed as cheap and effective medium of treating industrial effluents and wastewaters
