Compliance with dietary recommendations and frequency of supplements use by children and adolescents with neoplastic diseases

Abstract

 Introdution. Nutrition in neoplastic disease is important and should be adjusted to current patient’s clinical condition. Parents and children should have regular contact with dietitian who educates them about nutrition rules in neoplastic diseases. Aim. The aim of the study was to evaluate adhere dietary recommendations among children with neoplasms. Material and methods. The study included 30 children with neoplastic disease (13 girls and 17 boys), patients of the Department of Hematology and Oncology in the Children Centre of Pediatrics and Oncology under one of silesian hospital. Some of the patients were under control of outpatient Clinic of Hematology and Oncology. Author’s questionnaire with 27 questions were used in the study. Parents filled in the questionnaire. The research results were analysed by means of STATISTICA 10. The level of relevance was assumed at α = 0.05. Results. Most of the study participants consumed both hospital meals and products which were brought by parents/legal guardians. Only some of the parents/legal guardians paid attention to dietary recommendation when brought any products for children with neoplastic disease. The most of them (63.4%) pointed boiling like the most often method to prepare a meals. The most of children (63.3%) received supplements. Conclusions. 1.
