EFFECT OF GARLIC ON TOTAL ANTIOXIDANTS IN ALLOXAN INDUCED DIABETES MELLITUS RATS
Journal Title: International Journal of Biomedical and Advance Research - Year 2011, Vol 2, Issue 9
Abstract
Background and Objective: Diabetes mellitus is the single most common disorder across the globe. Although the metabolism of carbohydrates in diabetes is well characterized, the role of total antioxidants in diabetes is still to be investigated. Garlic has been used as a therapeutic agent and found to have hypoglycemic effect. In this study the role of garlic extract on total antioxidant level of diabetic and normal rats were investigated. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted the after the institutional ethical clearance. The present study involved four groups of six animals each. The total antioxidants were measured in the serum, lever and kidney by phosphomolybdenum method. Also the serum glucose level was measured. Data was analyzed for the statistical significance using students t’ test. P<0.05 was the level of significance. Results: The serum liver and kidney of the garlic treated diabetic rats showed significant increase in the total antioxidants when compared to diabetic rats. Diabetic rats showed a significant decrease on comparison with both garlic treated and normal rats. The serum of garlic treated diabetic rats showed decrease in glucose level that the diabetic rats. Conclusion: Our result indicates that the total antioxidant variation in diabetes mellitus reverses to normal on treatment with garlic extract along with hypoglycemic effect.
