Physiological responses of two seaweed biofilter candidates, Gracilariopsis bailiniae Zhang et Xia and Hydropuntia edulis (S Gmelin), to nutrient source and environmental factor

Abstract
Two gracilarioid species, Gracilariopsis bailiniae and Hydropuntia edulis, were compared based on their growth under different temperature and salinity levels and nitrogen source and on their photosynthetic responses under different irradiance levels. Results show that growth of Gp. bailiniae was significantly higher than that of H. edulis. Both species were euryhaline and had optimum growth rates at 27˚C (16.06 % d[sup]-1[/sup]± 0.10 for Gp. bailiniae and 9.53 % d[sup]-1[/sup]± 0.62 for H. edulis) under both ammonium and nitrate enrichment. Gracilariopsis bailiniae was able to use both N-forms as a nitrogen source in all temperature and salinity levels tested. Meanwhile, the interactive effect of nitrogen source with temperature was observed for H. edulis with plants grown in nitrate enrichment showing significantly higher growth rates than those in ammonium. Nitrate enrichment also resulted to higher growth rates for H. edulis in all salinity levels tested. Photosynthetic rates of Gp. bailiniae were higher than H. edulis. We also found a two-fold difference between the maximum photosynthetic rate (Pmax) of Gp. bailiniae (12.41 ± 1.81) and that of H. edulis (6.44 ± 0.62). However, photosynthetic efficiency (α) was significantly higher in H. edulis than in Gp. bailiniae while compensation and saturation point irradiance levels were similar in both species.

Heavy metal concentrations in two species of fish from the Crisul Negru River, Romania.
The aim of this paper is to establish the potential bioaccumulation of five heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Ni, Co, Zn) in two species of fish from Crisul Negru River (Romania), moderately polluted from a mining area, comparative...
Determination of chlorophyll a and total phosphorus abundance in organic manured fish ponds
An experiment was conducted for 6 weeks (between August and September 2010) with 4 treatments (T1: poultry manure, T2: cattle manure, T3: poultry and cattle manure and T4: control-no manure) assigned to 8 concrete ponds...
Environmental load of wels (Silurus glanis) fed by feeds of different protein levels
The most dangerous effect of the environment on traditional and intensive fish farming is the released nutriment loaded effluent water. Intensity is increased and the nutriment intake by artificial feeds cannot be utiliz...
Morphological characteristics and variation of rudd Scardinius erytrophthalmus (L.) from the Łuknajno Lake, Poland.
A total of 49 specimens of the rudd, Scardinius erytrophthalmus, were caught in the Łuknajno Lake, in 2005. For each fish, 24 morphometric features of the body and 20 features of the skull were measured. Selected meristi...
