TIME AND SPACE DISTRIBUTION OF SULPHURE DIOXIDE ACROSS DROBETA TURNU SEVERIN

Abstract

Atmospheric pollution in urban areas is currently one of the most serious problems society is confronted with. The intensive industrialization process has caused an imbalance in the relationship between the human society and the environment. Sulphur dioxide (S02) is one of the main pollutants of the atmosphere. The quantity of S02 in the atmosphere and the particle content (powders, smoke, and soot) constitute the most important indicators of air pollution. The presence of sulphur oxides in the atmosphere has a significant contribution to the formation of acid rains, smog (reduction of visibility), and clouds. From the analysis of the average annual values of S02 between 1996-2006 it may be observed that, during this period, the M.A.C. (.Maximum Allowable Concentration) has not been exceeded. Delimitation of the polluted areas using the isoconcentration curves leads to the emphasis on the level of pollution risk, as well as any possible effects with immediate or long term results.
