UPDATE ON ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE AT “ALEXANDRU IOAN CUZA” UNIVERSITY OF IASI: THE “CERNESIM” PROJECT
Journal Title: Analele Stiintifice ale Universitatii Alexandru Ioan Cuza din Iasi, Serie noua, Sectiunea II a. Biologie vegetala - Year 2010, Vol 56, Issue 2
Abstract
Following the identification of environmental studies as one of the critical medium and long-term priorities, and because of the institutional recognition of the need to increase the competitive capacity of “Alexandru Ioan Cuza University” (UAIC) in the field, a task team has been assembled from within 5 faculties and assigned with the development of a project aiming at upgrading and increasing the overall capacity of the environmental research infrastructure of UAIC. The first outcome of this collaborative multi-faculty effort was a project proposal called “Integrated Centre for Environmental Science Studies in the North-East Development Region – CERNESIM”, seeking to shoulder the regional development in North-Eastern Romania. The proposal has been submitted to the Sectoral Operational Program “Increasing Economic Competitiveness”, Priority Axis 2 – CDI, Operation 2.2.1. In this communication, we share our experience of success despite recurrent difficulties: an experience which, we believe, has a double relevance in the actual context of UAIC in particular, as a leading performance-seeking university in Romania, but also in the context of Romania in general, in the present crisis context where science and innovation is seen in Europe as the engine for a true and healthy economic re-launch. The communication hereby focuses on the project rationale, as well as discussing the institutional and the technical roles of the Faculty of Biology in the process and within the wider field of environmental sciences.
