Numerical Simulation of Tire Reinforced Sand behind Retaining Wall Under Earthquake Excitation
Journal Title: Engineering, Technology & Applied Science Research - Year 2014, Vol 4, Issue 2
Abstract
This paper studies the numerical simulations of retaining walls supporting tire reinforced sand subjected to El Centro earthquake excitation using finite element analysis. For this, four cases are studied: cantilever retaining wall supporting sand under static and dynamical excitation, and cantilever retaining wall supporting waste tire reinforced sand under static and dynamical excitation. Analytical external stability analyses of the selected retaining wall show that, for all four cases, the factors of safety for base sliding and overturning are less than default minimum values. Numerical analyses show that there are no large differences between the case of wall supporting waste tire reinforced sand and the case of wall supporting sand for static loading. Under seismic excitation, the higher value of Von Mises stress for the case of retaining wall supporting waste tire reinforced sand is 3.46 times lower compared to the case of retaining wall supporting sand. The variation of horizontal displacement (U1) and vertical displacement (U2) near the retaining wall, with depth, are also presented.

A Review on Self Compacting Concrete with Cementitious Materials and Fibers
Self-compacted concrete (SCC) is cast in the formwork without compaction and it fulfills the formwork due to its own weight. SCC is considered to have many advantages in comparison with conventional concrete like improve...
Design of a Self-Phased Quadrifilar Helix Antenna for Satellite Communication
The objective of this study is the design and implementation of a Quadrifilar Helix Antenna (QHA) for telemetry, tracking and control of a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite. Because of its cardioid-shaped circularly polari...
Constrained K-Means Classification
Classification-via-clustering (CvC) is a widely used method, using a clustering procedure to perform classification tasks. In this paper, a novel K-Means-based CvC algorithm is presented, analysed and evaluated. Two addi...
Influence of Austenite Phase Transformation on Existing Microstructure of Low C-Mn Steel
Cold heading quality CHQ steel is widely used for making small components due to its excellent cold heading response. Austenite nucleation and growth morphology of a commercial CHQ steel has been studied by continuous he...
Electrical Trees in a Composite Insulating System Consisted of Epoxy Resin and Mica: The Case of Multiple Mica Sheets For Machine Insulation
Epoxy resin and mica sheets consist the essential insulation of rotating machine stator bars. Such an insulation, although very resistant to partial discharges, is subjected to considerable electrical stresses and conseq...
