Nursing care of postoperative prostatectomy patients: an integrative review

Abstract
This integrative literature review was performed with the objective to synthesize the knowledge produced in articles regarding nursing care provided to postoperative prostatectomy patients. Five databases were consulted to select the articles– SCOPUS, CINAHL, PUBMED, LILACS and Cochrane – and nineteen articles were included. Results show that the articles met evidence levels II, IV, V, VI and VII, and most were performed in the United States between 1999 and 2011. The identified nursing practices were grouped into six categories: psychological treatment, postoperative treatment, erectile dysfunction treatment, urinary incontinence treatment, pain treatment and hyponatremia treatment. In conclusion, the studies with the highest levels of evidence recommend nursing care centered on psychological treatment, the treatment offered in the postoperative period and erectile dysfunction treatment. It is highlighted that these recommendations focus mainly on interventions for emotional and educational support
