Nursing Students’ Perceptions on Standardized Debriefing Experience After Clinical Simulation
Journal Title: IOSR Journal of Nursing and health Science - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 5
Abstract
Evidence from simulation research strongly supports the fact that debriefing is a vital aspect of simulated learning to allow for self-reflection on what took place, and so helps learners develop and integrate insights from experience into later actions. Although debriefing is an essential component of clinical simulation, research regarding the process is lacking. The objectives of this study were to explore the perceptions of nursing students regarding their debriefing experience after clinical simulation using an unstandardized model compared to the Ee-Chats Model and evaluates facilitators’ ability to conduct debriefing using Objective Structured Assessment of Debriefing tool (OSAD). A quasi experimental, pretest-posttest design was utilized for this study. This study was carried at College of Nursing-Jeddah, King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences in Saudi Arabia. A convenient sample of 266 nursing students participated. Survey method was used to compare unstandardized and Ee-chats debriefing model using Debriefing Experience Scale (DES) which developed by Reed (2012). Students were also asked to assess facilitators’ abilities to conduct debriefing usingObjective Structured Assessment of Debriefing tool (OSAD) developed by Arora, et al. (2012). The results indicated that there were statistically significant differences in the students’ perceptions about debriefing experience using unstandardized compared to Ee-Chats model (p<0.001). There was also statistically significant increase in students’ ratings of the importance of the items of the debriefing experience scale when using unstandardized compared to the Ee-Chats model of debriefing. Facilitators’ ability to conduct debriefing after training on debriefing was relatively high. Conclusions: Structured debriefing elicits high student ratings of their debriefing experience Training of students and faculties who are teaching the courses on structured debriefing is associated with positive responses in debriefing experience.
