Nutrition state of Polish national racewalking sport team – short report
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2013, Vol 29, Issue 1
Abstract
Background. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the diets of women (n = 7) and men (n = 6), the representatives of Polish National Racewalking Team.Material and methods. After determining the somatic parameters in the subjects, the quantity and quality of the consumed food and water were studied within 3 days. Based on these data, the energy value of daily diets was calculated, as well as the consumed amounts of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins A,D,E, B1, B2, B3, B6, B9, B12, and trace minerals such as sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper.Results. It was found that women had a higher body fat content, a lower lean body mass and body water than men (p <0.001). It was also shown that, despite the higher energy value of daily diets, higher protein consumption and bigger amounts of consumed fat and carbohydrates in men as compared with women, both groups reached similar values of these variables, expressed relative to body weight. In addition, the men consumed more vitamins (except vitamin A) than the women in their diet, not including supplements, and minerals. The introduced dietary supplementation did not change the inadequate proportions of the consumed proteins, fats and carbohydrates and it turned out that the supplementation of vitamins and minerals was largely unnecessary.Conclusions. Inadequate proportions of energetic components and the consumption of selected vitamins and minerals were not always corrected with supplementation. This could have an adverse effect on the body composition and athletic performance in the studied competitive racewalkers.
