O FANDANGO CAIÇARA E O CONCEITO DE CARNAVALIZAÇÃO DE BAKHTIN

Journal Title: Ideação - Year 2018, Vol 20, Issue 2

Abstract

Until the last decades of the twentieth century, the caiçara communities from Paraná and São Paulo States would make their living basically from fishing and products extracted from small plantations. To obtain these goods, the job was usually made by task force, in which people voluntarily participated with their workforce. As gratitude for the work done, the host used to invite people to a party, known as fandango. The main aim of this article is to reflect about the fandango’s constitution as a popular celebration and relate it to the notion of carnivalization by Bakhtin (1987). Analyzing carnival as a popular party in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, Bakhtin argues that the existing hierarchical relations experienced by people in recurrent circumstances of their social lives were completely forgotten during the celebrations, thus, people experienced a second life. We understood that the carnivalization notion could be associated to fandango caiçara. Then, we developed a documentary research, using as a corpus some interviews from the book Museu vivo do fandango (2006), in which some members of the caiçara communities express their representations about, between other things, meanings of fandango. We realized that, opposite to carnival in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the fandango celebration was not a moment of hierarchy abolition, since the caiçaras do not care much about hierarchies.
