Ocorrence of Antibodies Against Bovine Herpesvirus 1 and Bovine Viral Diarrhoea Virus in Crioula Lageana Cattle

Journal Title: Journal of Animal Science Advances - Year 2013, Vol 3, Issue 4

Abstract

Crioula Lageana cattle have been included in the list of species at risk of extinction by FAO due to the small number of breeding animals remaining in the country. This work evaluated the ocorrence of antibodies against BoHV1 and BVDV in 309 blood samples from non-vaccinated Crioula Lageana cattle breed in five municipalities in Santa Catarina State, Brazil. Serum positive animals were 29.77 (92/309) and 58.25% (180/309) for BoHV1 and BVDV, respectively, with 100% of the herds exposeded to the two viruses. Two age groups were established to the statistical analysis: group 1 (6 months-3 year) and group 2 (4 years or more). Ocorrence of BoHV1 in group 1 (2.58%) was significantly lower (P<0.01) than that in group 2 (24.59%), while for BVDV, no significant difference (P=0.9165) was observed between group 1 and 2. Age was considered a risk factor, not taking into account gender, but cannot be linked to antibody titre. BoHV1 and BVDV are disseminated in the Crioula Lageana and it is necessary to take control measures for these infections.
