Odrębne światy. Katecheci szkół średnich powiatu brzeskiego w okresie ofensywy ideologicznej

Abstract
Religion as a school subject has occupied an important place in Polish schools for centuries. Political changes after World War II caused deep transformations in education. The process of expulsion of religion from schools was characterized by varying dynamics. In this changing reality, catechists’ activities took on a specific nature. There were six schools functioning in the Brzesko district immediately after the war. The work of the local priests/teachers focused at that time around religious education, supporting Catholic tradition at schools, as well as developing resistance and opposition to the aggressive policy of youth secularization. Gradually, however, they had to give up their activity under the pressure of communist terror. Jan Stepa, the bishop of Tarnów, played a significant role in countering the atheization of schools. Priests Stanisław Pękała and Edward Limanówka were among the most distinguished catechists in Brzesko, and were devoted to teaching youth.
